Example project

A road scheme near Ennis, from the map to the contract documents

One line drawn on the map north of Ennis, Co. Clare, and the works described along it. Everything below came out of Ground Intel as it stands: nothing was written or corrected by hand.

The scheme is invented. The route, the works, the parties and the contract are made up for this example and are not a real project. The ground data is real: it was read from the public GSI, EPA, NPWS, Teagasc and OPW services on 8 October 2026.

The ground

Limestone lowland with karst features and turloughs, raised bog and cutover peat, and designated sites within the search corridor. The report rates 6 hazards high, 2 moderate and 2 low, each with the data behind it and what to do about it.

The works

A road at design stage, formation 1 m below ground, with these earthworks and structures:

ChainageWorks
Ch. 350 to 900 mCutting, 6 m deep
Ch. 700 mRetaining wall
Ch. 1,250 mBridge
Ch. 1,900 to 2,700 mEmbankment, 5 m high
Ch. 2,300 mCulvert
Ch. 3,300 mTrenchless crossing
Ch. 3,600 to 4,200 mEmbankment, 3 m high

The investigation

From the ground and the works, the rules scheduled 150 holes: 53 cable percussion boreholes, 39 trial pits, 21 rotary core boreholes, 19 boreholes with rotary follow-on, 9 cone penetration tests, 9 peat probes. With them, 7 geophysical surveys and 12 kinds of laboratory test. Every hole carries the reason it is there.

The documents

  • Desk study report · Word

Twelve chapters to Eurocode 7: geology, groundwater, geohazards, designated sites, the ground model and the recommended investigation. Without the map figures, which the app adds when you export from it.

  • Schedule 2: exploratory holes · Excel

Every hole with its type, chainage, coordinates, depth, in-situ tests and the reason it is there.

  • Bill of Quantities · Excel

Sections A to L measured from the schedule, unpriced, ready to issue with a tender.

  • Cost estimate · Excel

The same bill priced from the default rates, with a contingency. For the employer's budget, not for tenderers. 39 items have no default rate and are left for the engineer to price.
